Sleeve Gastrectomy

Think...GASTRIC SLEEVE

The gastric sleeve is a relatively new approach in bariatic surgery. It involves the removal of up to 85% of the stomach resulting in a small “tube” or “sleeve” to accommodate food, hence, creating a feeling of fullness after a small meal.

Unlike the gastric bypass, the gastric sleeve operation does not involve any “re-routing” of the small bowel, nor the implantation of a plastic device as seen with the LAP-BAND technique.

Patients can achieve an average weight loss up to 60% of their excess weight within 1 year.
The gastric sleeve can be performed through small incisions in the abdomen (laparoscopy), resulting in fast recovery and better cosmetics and minimal discomfort for the patient.

Patients can usually expect to return home within 24 hs after surgery.

What are the advantages of the Gastric Sleeve?
The Gastric Sleeve is a faster, technically less complex operation than the gastric bypass.
Unlike the gastric bypass, gastric Sleeve does NOT involve the division of the small bowel with re-communication to the stomach pouch.
This is safer operation, especially for patients suffering from severe heart ailment.
Gastric Sleeve eliminates the portion of the stomach that produces the hormones that stimulates hunger (Ghrelin).
Does not need adjustments or fills as seen with the Lap Band.
Does not involve the placement of a foreign body as seen with the Lap Band.
The gastric Sleeve can be considered as a first stage of a two stage weight loss procedure if necessary.

What are the disadvantages of the Gastric Sleeve?
Several health Insurance plans do not cover the Gastric Sleeve.
Patient who are seeking weight loss higher than 70% of their excess body weight may want to consider a gastric bypass operation.
Relatively new procedure (limited long term outcome data).
May not be as good as gastric bypass for “sweet eaters”.

You should consider a Gastric Sleeve:

* If you have concerns about potential long term effect following gastric bypass, such as malnutrition, bowel obstruction, ulcers, protein and vitamin deficiency
* If you are concerned of having a foreign body (Lap Band) inside the abdomen with its potential complications such as erosion into the stomach, obstruction, infection and eventually removal of the device.
* If you are a high risk patients for surgery based on your overall health status.
* If you have work or scheduling issues that will not allow you no follow up every 4 to 6 months as is necessary after the Lap Band.
